Failed and Forgotten

Parent Carers and their children “Failed and Forgotten”

The Disabled Children’s Partnership (a national charity that supports disabled children and their families) have published a new report called, Failed and Forgotten

Their report surveyed more than 2,000 families. The findings of the research were very troubling:

  • 50% of parents with a disabled child are unable to work and have been in poverty at one time due to the lack of support they receive for their child.
  • 75% of parents have had to leave employment and, in some cases, their entire career, as they receive such little support for their child.
  • 70% of parents stated that their child’s health was negatively affected due to the lack of support.
  • Only a third of parents feel their disabled child received the correct level of educational support.
  • One in seven families feel they have received the correct level of support from social care.
  • One in five families feel they have received the appropriate level of support from health services.
  • One in five families feel they have received the appropriate level of support for their child to reach their full potential.
  • 38% of parents with a disabled child have gone through a marriage or relationship breakdown in the last year due to the lack of support their disabled child has received.

These findings show the bleak outlook for parents of special needs children and their plight.  In a community that has discrimination as one of its fundamental social norms, how can they ever hope for equality?
